Celebrate Christmas 1850s-style at Ulverston’s Dickensian Christmas Festival, now in its 15th year. Thousands of people flock to this quaint, cobbled Cumbrian town in November as it dons a distinctly antique mantle for this one weekend a year, and visitors revel in the re-created atmosphere of a traditional market town in the Dickensian era.
With hundreds of Christmas market stalls selling unusual gifts and festive food, traditional fairground attractions including a Helter Skelter, and lots of music from Folk to Brass Bands as well as Ulverston’s fantastic specialist shops and great pubs and cafes, you are sure to find plenty to tempt you. There is a huge range of other free entertainment too; events for children, costume competitions, balloon modelling and horse drawn carriages to name just a few examples. Local people in period dress take part in a grand parade on each of the days and visitors are encouraged to join in with the festivities, though we should make clear that period dress is not compulsory!
This great-value two day pre-Christmas break also includes an overnight hotel stay with dinner and breakfast, and a tour of the Lake District with visits to Windermere and Keswick.
